Lock rekeying
Rekeying changes the inside of your existing locks so old keys stop working and a new key takes over. We rekey Fernley homes and rentals on-site, and it usually costs less than buying new locks. Call (775) 302-1280 and tell us how many locks you have.

Inside most door locks is a row of small pins. The cuts on your key push those pins to just the right height so the lock can turn. When we rekey a lock, we take out the old pins and put in a new set that matches a new key. The lock looks the same and works the same, but the old keys no longer fit.
That makes rekeying one of the simplest ways for a home locksmith to make a house secure again. You keep the hardware you already have, and only the keys change.
When your locks are worn out, damaged, or you want a different style or a smart lock, lock change and installation is the better choice. We can help you decide.

Previous owners, renters, cleaners and contractors may all still have keys to a new or resale home.
If you do not know where a key is, rekeying makes it useless. It is common after a house lockout caused by lost keys.
A roommate, ex-partner, tenant or employee kept a key, or you are not sure they returned all of them.

Most standard home locks can be rekeyed. Some high-security, electronic or very old locks cannot, and we will tell you if that is the case. Landlords and business owners can also ask about rekeying for landlords and businesses, including master key setups.
Rekeying is priced mainly by the number of locks. The type of lock matters too: a standard knob lock is quicker than a high-security deadbolt. Other factors include whether you want every door on one key, how many spare keys you need, and how far we travel. We give you the price before any work starts, and it is usually less than replacing the same number of locks. See our locksmith prices page for more.
For landlords and property managers, rekeying between tenants is one of the easiest ways to protect a new renter and the property. Former tenants may have made copies, lent keys to friends or simply never returned every key. A rekey ends all of that.
Because rekeying reuses the existing hardware, it keeps turnover costs down, and all of a unit’s doors can be set to one new key. If you manage several rentals, tell us how many units and doors are involved and we can plan the work around your move-out and move-in dates.
